FLIGHT LESSON 3: RATE CLIMBS/DESCENTS, TIMED TURNS, AND MAGNETIC COMPASS TURNS

Objective: To introduce the pilot to constant rate climbs and descents, timed turns to magnetic compass headings, and magnetic compass turns. Additionally, this lesson will increase the pilot’s proficiency in attitude instrument flying.

Completion Standards

The lesson will have been successfully completed when the pilot displays an understanding of how to perform rate climbs and descents, calibrate the turn coordinator for timed turns, and make turns to headings by use of a timed turn or the magnetic compass. Additionally, the pilot will demonstrate increased proficiency in attitude instrument flying. The pilot will be able to maintain the desired altitude, ±150 ft.; airspeed, ±10 kt.; and heading, ±15°.
